My primary research interests lie with the social sources of state action in international politics, with an empirical focus on the United Kingdom, the US, and the European Union. I am also interested in theory – both sociological and international. With one foot in International Relations, while my home is in the discipline of Sociology, I am currently working on two books: The End of Engagement: China and Russia in U.S. Strategy Since the Cold War and American Hegemony and the Rise of China: Knowing the PRC in the United States, Australia, and Britain.
